US/Nigeria Relations: Akpabio Meets Envoy To Strenghten Ties
President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio has held talks with the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jnr,as part of efforts to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
The discussions took place during a courtesy visit by the US envoy to the National Assembly in Abuja, where both sides expressed a desire for a more robust diplomatic partnership.
The meeting highlighted the shared goal of promoting democratic governance, noting that Nigeria’s democracy was modelled after the American system, underscoring the importance of nurturing and preserving it.
The Senate President acknowledged the long-standing democratic practice in the United States, which has spanned 249 years, and contrasted it with Nigeria’s own journey, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration.
He also noted that both countries share a common belief in God, despite Nigeria’s religious and ethnic diversity, as a unifying value that has contributed to America’s prosperity and international support.
Ambassador Mills, in his remarks, stated that his visit was intended to discuss US-Nigeria relations and explore ways to strengthen collaboration.
He highlighted the US Mission’s interest in advancing shared goals and gaining insight into the legislative agenda of the Nigerian Senate in the coming year.
The meeting reflected a commitment from both sides to deepen diplomatic ties and foster mutual understanding between Nigeria and the United States.
